Jacques de Klerk's day job is making wine at Somerset West producer Radford Dale. Like many a talented winemaker in South Africa, Jacques has more than one string to his bow. His second string is Reverie, which started with a Chenin Blanc and now this revolutionary Pinotage.
From a single, dry-farmed vineyard planted in 1999 in the cooler Voor-Paardeberg region, on granite 'Scali' soils. This is fermented with carbonic maceration, unlocking the softer, juicier side of Pinotage. Foot stomped and basket pressed, transferred to old barrels for ten months for maturation.
This 2018 debut vintage was described by Wine Show presenter Joe Fattorini as his "favourite wine this year" during the first lockdown. Vibrant crimson, a violet rim, instantly setting this apart from the darker, more extracted styles of Pinotage you might have tried before. Fresh raspberries & dried herbs pull you in, and the wine seems almost weightless, with cherry fruit and hints of pomegranate, spicy overtones, and a long, fresh finish. Remarkable, brave and game changing!
