Matthew van Heerden comes from a long line of farmers in KwaZulu-Natal but moved to the Western Cape to study winemaking at Elsenburg and has since racked up more than fifteen vintages including stints as the winemaker at both Uva Mira in Stellenbosch as well as Iona in Elgin. In 2006, the IWSC named Matthew in the top 10 winemakers in the world and in 2011, he was named South African Young Winemaker of the Year. It is the cooler climes that have captivated him most, and he has perhaps the greatest experience of Elgin of any of the younger new wave of winemakers in South Africa.
This Chardonnay was sourced from sites planted predominantly on decomposed granite and shale with cool climates. Naturally fermented in barrel at cool temperatures, and settling on the lees for added complexity. It's a truly stunning Chardonnay, one of South Africa's finest.
“This is one of the best interpretations of the grape in the Cape: subtle, balanced, elegant and refreshing with stone fruit and falvours of lemon butter and gunflint. The new oak is very well integrated here.”
