Up high along the eastern edge of the Andes Mountains is Vista Flores. This tiny appellation in Mendoza is where winemaker Alfredo Merlo and grower Matias Fraga make MAAL, which simply stands for "Malbec As Alfredo Likes". It's all about Malbec for these guys, produced in varying styles and grown 900-1350m above sea level. While the majority of their fruit comes from Vista Flores, they also source small parcels from top appellations such us Las Compuertas, in Luján de Cuyo, and Campo Los Andes, in Uco Valley.
Biolento is named in honour of the "small and violent creatures that attack the vineyard and represent the biggest challenge of ecological farming"! The Malbec grapes are sourced from their 95-year-old vineyard in Las Compuertas, organically farmed at an altitude of 980 metres in Luján de Cuyo, a key sub-region of Mendoza. The soils are rich clay with silt and gravel.
This wine is naturally fermented, unfined & unfiltered and spends 6 months in older French oak barrels, bringing a darker, spicier depth to it than others in the MAAL range but still with the bright fruit flavours we expect from these guys. Ripe raspberries and blueberries with plenty of dark chocolate and a minty overtone.
