Sam Coverdale established Even Keel in 2006 with a vision to create drinkable, elegant wines that celebrate the individual strengths of Australia’s wine regions. Since 2009, he has specialised in single-vineyard wines from his Polperro farm in the higher reaches of the Mornington Peninsula, using a mix of organic and biodynamic viticulture.
Situated in New South Wales' Snowy Mountains, Tumbarumba is a relatively young wine region and part of the section of the Australian Alps that includes Mt Kosciuszko, Australia's highest peak. Vineyards range in altitude from 209 to 1,290 metres.
Tumbarumba is famed for Chardonnay, and Sam works with one of the best growers, Cathy Gairne. Her vineyards are farmed organically (uncertified) and this particular site is 700m above sea level.
Fermented naturally in barrel, including some natural malolactic fermentation. It's a generous yet clean, fresh, modern style of Aussie Chardonnay, with plenty of fruit from the mid-palate onwards. Light on its feet and with an expressive, layered texture to it. Not at all fat, neither is it lean, mean and green. It is above all about telling the story of a vineyard in that year and being loyal to that story.
