Damien Pinon is the third-generation winemaker on his 25-hectare family property in the commune of Vernou-sur-Brenne, which he manages with his wife Ingrid. They only make wines from Chenin Blanc, with vines on average 30-years-old, according to the means of lutte raisonée. The wines are aged in traditional cellars dug straight into the tuffo, and are rich, balanced and true expressions of the joys of Chenin Blanc from Vouvray, one of the most famous wines of the Loire Valley and renowned for ageability.
Les Perruches is an off-dry Vouvray, known as 'demi sec' with lower alcohol, some residual sugar but balanced by high acidity giving a luscious yet still refreshing drink. It is a sweeter style that certain wine regions do very well and Vouvray is one of the greatest. Only the best Chenin Blanc was hand-harvested from the vineyard, it was naturally fermented and this fermentation stopped with a small addition of sulfites to capture that additional sweetness.
It has an arresting flavour profile of rich tropical fruits like mango and passion fruit, underpinned by stewed apple and spice. Gorgeous.
