The only wine farm on the Cape Point peninsula has a striking vantage point above the surf breaks of Noordhoek, less than a mile from the ocean. History books tell us there’s been a vineyard here since 1752 but the current farm was re-planted in 1996.
Their own ‘monopole’ (a single-producer appellation) was created in 1998 with the Cape Point Wine of Origin and the farm has since developed a reputation for the most remarkable Sauvignon Blanc in the Western Cape, now made by talented young winemaker Riandri Visser.
Isliedh is a remarkable combination of coastal Sauvignon Blanc drenched in richly textured Semillon, both varieties marrying beautifully and bringing almost unparalleled complexity to the wine. This truly is one of South Africa's iconic white blends, lauded every year by critics and competitions. The 2018 vintage was rated 96 points by Tim Atkin MW, for instance, and named one of his top white blends in South Africa in his influential report on the country's wines.
The Sauvignon Blanc comes from the highest, most exposed block on the Noordhoek property, in the full face of the Atlantic Ocean. It was fermented and aged in French oak (40% new) for 10 months. The Semillon component was interestingly made in clay amphorae constructed from clay from the immediate Cape Point area itself.
The blend offers beautiful floral notes of white orchid, rose and peach blossom. The fruit leaps from the glass unveiling a harmonious array of white fruits, ripe nectarine, pink grapefruit, figs and lemon curd. Hints of floral oak spice combined with fresh thyme gives the wine an extra layer of depth. The palate is rich, saline, full and textured with the classic long lasting mineral finish.
