The great villages and vineyards of Burgundy are first among many people's considerations for great wines. Their success and style has led to Chardonnay, the grape of choice in the region, becoming one of the most widely planted grapes in the world, and countless attempts to recreate its distinctive styles in almost every wine producing country.

Here at Pip I think it would be fair to say that we specialise in 'Something a bit different' and so this selection of three wines showcases some of our favourite alternatives to white Burgundy from around the world:

Mathew Van Heerden Signature Chardonnay

Matthew is a highly regarded South African winemaker. In 2006, the IWSC named him in the top 10 winemakers in the world and in 2011, he was named South African Young Winemaker of the Year. It is the cooler climes that have captivated him most, and he has perhaps the greatest experience of Elgin of any of the younger new wave of winemakers in South Africa.

This Chardonnay was sourced from sites planted predominantly on decomposed granite and shale with cool climates. Naturally fermented in barrel at cool temperatures, and settling on the lees for added complexity. It's a truly stunning Chardonnay, one of South Africa's finest.

“This is one of the best interpretations of the grape in the Cape.” - Tim Atkin MW

Mira do Ó Druida Branco Reserva

This is one of the iconic white wines of Portugal. It is made using one of Portugal's many indigenous varieties, Encruzado, which offers the same affinity for oak that Chardonnay is famous for. It is elegant, intense and complex nose in which mineral and flinty notes dominate over hints of citrus fruits, flowers and thyme. the great freshness and elegance is balanced by an enchanting texture and structure, fantastic acidity and a lingering finish.

Haywire Secrest Mountain Chardonnay

This unoaked wine from British Columbia is a great alternative to Chablis, the fresh, zesty Chardonnay made in the north of Burgundy. This is Chardonnay made the way nature intended. It is free from oak, additives, and not manipulated. It is a thing of beauty. A fresh and expressive wine that showcases what cool climate chardonnay can be.
