Red Bordeaux, or Claret as it is often known in the UK, is one of the most well know styles of wine in the world. Sought after for its longevity, depth of flavour and complexity this style of wine has been the inspiration for many winemakers across the globe.

This selection consists of three of our favourite takes on this historic style of wine.:

David Franz Plane Turning Right

The name of this 'Bordeaux blend', Plane Turning Right, is a nod to the right bank of Bordeaux where blends are dominated by Merlot.  Aged in oak hogsheads, the wine has a gorgeous finesse to it. We're going to leave the rest of the tasting note to David himself:

"The stick is pushed forward and a heady dive into a whirlpool of gauzy silken scarves, coy glances and promises of heaven while the steady Rhumba of a well rounded dancer leads you ever further from the safety of your friends. You turn to look back but the purple haze obscures your vision and cherry wood sticks softly tap on your thighs; warnings of discipline to come… Before the night draws to a close."

Ahren's Family Seventy

This red from the Bottelary Hills, north-west of Stellenbosch, is absolutely gorgeous. It's a re-enactment of the old-school Stellenbosch blend so prevalent in the 1960s and 1970s: old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc (backbone) combined with the traditional workhorse grape Cinsault (juiciness).

Naturally fermented and matured in old, tight-grain, 225-litre French oak barrels for 18 months. The aim is gentle micro-oxygenation rather than adding overt oaky flavours. The end result is deliciously distinctive. Herbaceous aroma, reveals ripe blackcurrants and umami savouriness, very smooth with refined tannins and long finish. A wine to lodge in the memory.

Tenuta Casenuove IGT Toscana

Super Tuscans rose to prominence in the 1970s when winemakers in Tuscany grew frustrated with the slow-moving bureaucratic limitations of the region and began adding unauthorized international grape varieties such as those used in Bordeaux (Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon etc.) to make high quality wines. Because they do not always fit in the rules of their regions they are often labelled IGT, instead of DOC or DOCG which are often seen as indicators of quality.

Tenuta Casenuove's Super Tuscan is a blend of 60% Sangiovese and 40% Merlot. This blend immediately shows what it is capable of: a magnificent bouquet of black and red fruits, mocha and mineral notes, with great complexity. The dense, concentrated palate reveals fine, firm tannins, as ripe as one could wish. The texture is velvety, with great volume right from the start and an underlying freshness which adds firmness, then stretches out into a finish which is full, tannic and voluptuous.
