The iconic cru classé producer Clos Cibonne gets its name from Jean-Baptiste de Cibon, captain of Louis XVI's navy and the farm's first owner. The great André Roux devoted the his efforts to the difficult Tibouren grape in the 1930s and today his descendants carry on that tradition.
Cuvée Tradition Tibouren is indisputably one of the finest rosé wines in the world, and one of the most recognisable with its historic label, unchanged since the 1930s.
The vineyards are arranged alongside a pronounced coastal ridge, visible on those labels and overlooking the Gulf of Toulon. The influence of the Mediterranean is key. Farming is organic (now certified).
Young winemaker Olivier Deforges rests this for over a year - the vintage is always one year behind what you'd expect for Provence rosé - in very big, 110-year-old oak casks (see photo) before bottling, creating an enthralling, smooth, savoury, gastronomic, elegant and sought-after rosé. Just outstanding.
